Hammond Police are asking residents to call 911 if anyone suspicious approaches them posing as a repairman attempting to gain access into homes.  A 78-year-old Hammond man told police he was outside about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday trimming bushes at his apartment in the 4300 block of Dearborn Avenue when he was approached by a man wearing a yellow vest and holding a black radio.

The suspect — described to police as Hispanic and having a mustache and small goatee — told the resident he was there to replace a portion of his broken sidewalk. According to police, the suspect then suggested they go inside the apartment to gauge the damage.

The suspect walked into the home with the resident while a second man entered, police were told.  Multiple envelopes containing U.S. currency were taken from his kitchen table, he told police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hammond police detectives at (219) 852-2906.
